My Approach: Training Masons, Rebuilding Stronger

After the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, Nepal learned a hard lesson: buildings don't kill people — bad construction does. I believe the most effective way to build back safer is not through new materials alone, but through the hands that place them. That means training the mason.

Vision and Innovation

My vision is to transform every village mason into a seismic-safe builder. I am committed to replacing dangerous practices — like flat stones, weak mortar, and missing bands — with proven techniques: through-stones, corner reinforcement, and continuous load paths.

Identifying Unique Challenges

After Gorkha, I saw the same failures everywhere: no horizontal bands, no vertical reinforcement, and mud mortar that washed away in one monsoon. The challenge was not a lack of materials — it was a lack of knowledge. Masons were building the way their fathers did, not the way the ground demanded.

Resolving Complex Problems

Training is not a lecture. It's a hands-on process. I work directly with masons on live sites — showing them how to place a timber band, tie bamboo reinforcement, and build a foundation that doesn't crack. I take complex earthquake engineering and turn it into simple, repeatable actions. No formulas. Just demonstrations.

User-Centric Design — The Mason Is the User

The cornerstone of my training is respect for the mason. I don't blame them for past failures — I equip them for future safety. I use their language, their tools, and their pace. A trained mason doesn't just build better — they train others. That's how safety spreads.

Meeting User Needs — From Training to Practice

I address the real needs of masons: clear demonstrations, low-cost materials, and pride in their work. After training, masons leave with a checklist, not a certificate. They know what a continuous load path looks like. They know why a missing band is a broken promise. And they know bamboo works — if you treat it, tie it, and place it right.
